🎭 “Keeping Up Appearances” Cast: Where Are They Now?

A nostalgic look at the lives behind the iconic British sitcom characters

Keeping Up Appearances is one of Britain’s most beloved sitcoms, airing from 1990 to 1995. It followed the hilarious, status-obsessed Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced “Bouquet!”) and her quest to climb the social ladder—often to the exasperation of her friends and family. But what happened to the actors after the curtain closed?

Let’s catch up with the unforgettable cast members, their careers, and personal lives after the series ended:

Patricia Routledge (Hyacinth Bucket)

Patricia Routledge, the brilliant actress behind Hyacinth, continued working in theatre and television after the show. In 2017, she was made a Dame for her contributions to the arts and charity work. In December 2024, she was spotted dining at Chez Moi in Bognor Regis at the remarkable age of 95, still sharp and elegant.

Clive Swift (Richard Bucket)

Clive Swift played Hyacinth’s ever-tolerant husband, Richard. After the series, he continued to act in theatre and television before sadly passing away in 2019 at the age of 82.

Judy Cornwell (Daisy)

Judy Cornwell, who played Daisy, stayed active in acting and also published several books. Now 85, she still participates in arts and literary events.

Geoffrey Hughes (Onslow)

The lovable slob Onslow was portrayed by Geoffrey Hughes. Known also for his roles in The Royle Family and Coronation Street, Geoffrey sadly passed away in 2012 at the age of 68 after a battle with cancer.

Shirley Stelfox (Rose – Season 1)

Shirley played the flirty Rose in Season 1 before being replaced. She had a successful career in TV drama (Emmerdale, notably) and passed away in 2015 at age 74.

Mary Millar (Rose – Seasons 2–5)

Taking over the role of Rose from Season 2, Mary Millar brought a theatrical flair to the character. Sadly, she died of ovarian cancer in 1998, aged 62.

Josephine Tewson (Elizabeth Warden)

Josephine Tewson, known for her twitchy tea-drinking scenes with Hyacinth, remained active in acting and stage work. She passed away peacefully in 2022 at the age of 91.

David Griffin (Emmet Hawksworth)

David Griffin portrayed the reluctant choir director Emmet. Post-Appearances, he continued performing in theatre, frequently collaborating with actress Su Pollard.

🌟 A Legacy of Laughter

Though time has passed, the charm of Keeping Up Appearances lives on. The show’s sharp wit and timeless performances continue to delight fans old and new. The cast may have gone in different directions—or sadly, left us—but their legacy remains unmistakable.
