Axed Coronation Street star Katie Redford joins Keeping Up Appearances prequel

Katie Redford was initially cast as Sarah-Louise Platt’s 14-year-old daughter before her true age was discovered.

The 27-year-old was axed from the ITV soap after giving a false age and subsequently replaced by 20-year-old Lucy Fallon.

However, Katie will now be taking on the role of Hyacinth Bucket’s down-to-Earth younger sister Rose

Rose was originally played by Mary Millar and was known for her short skirts and roving eye for married men.

Kerry Howard has been cast in the lead role of Hyacinth in the one-off special, which originally made a star of Patricia Routledge.

She is best known for her role in BBC Three comedy Him & Her, opposite Russell Tovey.

The 34-year-old is also the sister of stand-up comedian Russell Howard, she told the BBC in a recent interview: "This is a gift of a part ... I can't wait to play her.”

Young Hyacinth has been written by Keeping Up Appearances creator Roy Clarke, who said: "I've been allowed to wander into her background and investigate, almost a piece of archaeology really, until there she was - Young Hyacinth in early blossom.

"I hope those who knew her in her prime will find as much pleasure in this recreation of her as I have,” he added.

The new series will be set in the 1950s and see a young Hyacinth making desperate attempts to climb the social ladder and escape her working class roots.

Game of Thrones star Mark Addy will play Hyacinth’s ever-suffering father, while Last Tango in Halifax’s Tony Gardner will have a part.
