Britain is mourning the death of comic actor Clive Swift, best known for his role in Keeping Up Appearances, but who was he married to?
CLIVE Swift's ex-wife, Dame Margaret Drabble, is a big name in her own right.
The 79-year-old is well known in the book world as a poet, critic and biographer.
Who is Clive Swift's ex-wife Margaret Drabble?
In the 2008 Birthday Honours, Margaret Drabble Margaret Drabble which recognised her career in and service to literature.
Margaret was born in Sheffield on June 5 1939 which was three months before the outbreak of World War Two.
was educated at the Mount School, a Quaker boarding school in York, and read English at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she met a young aspiring actor called Clive Swift.
She went with him to Stratford-upon-Avon and became an actress and worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Here she once served as an understudy for Vanessa Redgrave.
Aged 21 she married Clive.
She later began her career as a writer, with 20 books to her name.
Why did they divorce?
Margaret was married to Clive Swift in 1960 and divorced in 1975. After they split they remained friends.
In a first person piece written in 2015, she said: “Clive and I were together for seven years, then we were semi-together, then divorced and now we see a lot of each other, we go out together a bit.”
Did they have any children?
They had one daughter, Rebecca, and two sons, Adam Swift, an academic, and Joe Swift, a TV gardener.
Tragically, Rebecca passed away in 2017 following a battle with cancer, aged 53.
