TALKING HEADS began this evening with Imelda Staunton taking centre stage in the new BBC adaptation series of Alan Bennett's original works. However, fans of Patricia Routledge version were left divided by the latest actress in the role.
Talking Heads first aired on BBC One over 30 years ago, with numerous famous faces performing dramatic monologues in half-hour episodes. Imelda Staunton, 64, is just one of 12 actors and actresses featuring in the new series, including two new stories written by Bennett. For the purpose of a modern audience and filmed in adherence to social distancing practices during the coronavirus lockdown, the stars of the adaptation have given their take on the original tales. However, viewers had very differing opinions on the classic A Lady Of Letters as Patricia Routledge, 91, was no longer portraying the role of Irene Ruddock.
When the episode first aired in 1988, the former Keeping Up Appearances actress was nominated for a BAFTA for her portrayal of the letter-writing character.
The story explores the obsession the pensioner had with her neighbours, who she believed were neglecting their child, only to discover he had died of leukaemia in hospital.
After being questioned by police, the troubled woman was put behind bars on a suspended sentence for the abuse she inflicted on the devastated parents.
As well as being included in A-Level and GSCE syllabus’, the classic tale has become infamous for Patricia’s characterisation, making it incomprehensible to some that someone could replace her.
However, filmed at the Elstree Studios and giving the raw emotion her predecessor gave over 32 years ago, Imelda left some viewers believing she was the perfect person to take on the role.
Others weren’t too convinced and fans of the originals flocked to Twitter to pass comment on the recasting for the modern adaptations.
Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: “I know I’m watching Imelda Staunton but I can’t help thinking about Patricia Routledge. A Lady of Letters #TalkingHeads.”
Another added: “Imelda Staunton, good as she is, showing how brilliant Patricia Routledge was in this part. In comparison, this is just recitation with accent slips. #Talkingheads #Aladyofletters.”
Whilst a third commented: “Maybe I'm being picky but I think Patricia Routledge did it better. #TalkingHeads.”
“I love Imelda Staunton. However, I can still hear the cadence of Patricia Routledge! #talkingheads Is great TV,” a fourth remarked.
